News3/19/2010 Midwest Electric awards $5,500 in scholarships to seven local youthMarion Local High School's Megan Schaefer and New Bremen High School's Aaron Freeman captured top honors in the 2010 Midwest Electric scholarship competition, featuring judges from Wright State University-Lake Campus and Midwest Electric. The two seniors each receive a $1,000 scholarship and will represent Midwest Electric in the Ohio Rural Electric Cooperatives statewide scholarship competition, May 10 in Columbus. Second place $750 scholarships were awarded to Jessica Wellman, Coldwater High School, and Zachary Dillon, New Knoxville High School. Receiving third place $500 scholarship awards were Brittany Henning and Matthew Muhlenkamp, St. Marys Memorial High School. The six were selected from a field of 49 area high school seniors, with a 3.5 or higher grade point average, whose parents are Midwest Electric members. Schaefer has a 4.0 grade point average and is ranked first in her class. She is planning to study bio-chemistry and pre-med at Miami University. Megan is the daughter of Dave and Cheryl Schaefer, Maria Stein. Freeman is the son of James and Debra Freeman, New Bremen. He has a 3.92 grade point average, is fifth in his class and is planning to pursue an education in mechanical engineering at Wright State University - Lake Campus. Wellman will study music therapy in college. She has a 4.0 grade point average and is ranked sixth in her class. Her parents are Daniel and Diane Wellman, Coldwater. Dillon will major in biomedical engineering at the University of Toledo. He has a 3.99 grade point average, is ranked fourth in his class and is the son of Jesse and Michelle Dillon, New Knoxville. Henning will study nursing in college. She has a 4.0 grade point average and is ranked third in her class. She is the daughter of Darrin and Beth Henning, St. Marys. Muhlenkamp will study finance or business in college. He has a 4.0 grade point average, is ranked first in his class, and is the son of Cletus and Pauline Muhlenkamp, St. Marys. Additionally, Kimberly Obringer, Coldwater High School, won the $1,000 Touchstone Energy Achievement Scholarship, which is awarded to a student who has overcome a significant challenge in pursuit of their goals. Kimberly, the daughter of Mary Obringer, plans to attend Bowling Green State University and study to become an intervention specialist.
