Hot Weather, Higher Bills Simple Ways to Save on Summer Energy Use

With the recent stretch of extreme heat, many members have noticed higher electric bills. We know unexpected increases can be frustrating, so we want to explain what’s driving the change — and share simple ways to stay comfortable while keeping costs manageable.

How hot weather affects your bill

Hot weather doesn’t just make your home uncomfortable — it makes your cooling system work significantly harder.

  • Cooling and heating account for 40–50% of a typical home’s energy use.
  • Your AC runs longer even if you never change the thermostat. On a 95° day, it may run 40–60% more than on a mild day.
  • Pool pumps add a substantial load if you have a pool.
  • More time indoors during peak heat means more use of lights, appliances, and electronics.

Ways to save during summer heat

Small changes can make a noticeable difference.

  • Set your thermostat to the highest comfortable temperature (76–78° is ideal).
  • Ceiling fans help circulate air, making a room feel cooler and reducing the need to adjust your thermostat.
  • Close blinds and curtains during the hottest part of the day.
  • For pools: reduce pump run‑time, use a cover, and consider energy‑efficient equipment.

Tools to help you stay in control

In SmartHub, you can view your energy usage for the year, month, day, or hour. If you notice a spike at a particular time, you can connect it to activities happening in your home and make adjustments accordingly. You can also set alerts that notify you when your usage exceeds a level you specify. Additionally, we have a new energy usage tool that helps you understand where your energy is being consumed. To receive a more accurate analysis, please complete your home profile.
