Midwest Electric Scholarships
A strong community starts with a strong education.
High School Seniors...
If your parents or legal guardian live in Midwest Electric service territory and receive their electricity from the cooperative, you may apply for a Midwest Electric scholarship. Applicants who plan on continuing their education at a college, university, or technical school are eligible for consideration.
Read below to learn about the scholarship opportunities available, instructions and rules for each scholarship, and to download applications. Please fill out the applications online, print, and return them to the Midwest Electric office. Contact the office if you have any questions.
CHILDREN OF MEMBERS SCHOLARSHIP
Each spring, Midwest Electric awards six Children of Members Scholarships for a total of $9,000. This scholarship has two phases, one local and one statewide. Midwest Electric will award scholarships to the top local students based upon a competition with other applicants. The top applicant will be eligible to compete for additional scholarships from Ohio’s Electric Cooperatives during the statewide competition in Columbus on April 12, 2023.
To qualify, your parents must be customers of the cooperative. The parents must be year-round full-time residents of the cooperative; seasonal and commercial members do not qualify. Other rules apply. Completed applications, grade transcripts, essays, and letters of support (see below) must be received in our office by February 17, 2023. Contact our office for details.
RULES AND REGULATIONS:
To be eligible for the Midwest Electric, Inc. Scholarship Awards, the following provisions will govern the acceptance of applications:
- Applicants must be a son, daughter, or legal ward of a Midwest Electric, Inc. residential member living on the lines and receiving service at the time of competition.
- Applicants must be graduating seniors who have all basic credits for college, or proper vocational, or technical school entrance. (A “proper vocational or technical school” is defined as a post-secondary institution where credits can be transferred to a state-accredited four-year college.)
- Applicants in both divisions must have a current career average of 3.5 or above on a 4.0 scale, or equivalent standing on a nontraditional scale. Winners must provide proof of enrollment in an accredited college to claim their scholarship.
- Applicants may not be immediate family members of, or reside with, people who are employed by any electric cooperative in Ohio (employees, trustees, managers, OEC, or affiliated.)
- Applications for the Midwest Electric, Inc. competition must be submitted (typed to be accepted) on the forms provided by Midwest Electric, Inc. or downloaded from www.midwestrec.com/scholarships. Application information must be confined to the official nomination form. The only attachments permitted are transcripts, teacher recommendations, student essay, and one photo of the applicant. (Teacher recommendations must be no more than 500-words.)
- All scholarships must be accepted in the first academic year after proof of enrollment is received. However, an extension of one year may be granted for just cause in the judgment of the president of OEC. In the event a student is unable to fulfill his enrollment obligation under this program, the award is forfeited.
- Applicants who have received “full ride” scholarships (tuition, room, board, and books) to the schools of their choice are not eligible for scholarships from Midwest Electric, Inc.
- One winner will be chosen to represent Midwest Electric, Inc. in the statewide scholarship competition where he or she will compete for additional scholarships. Eligibility requirements apply. Contact the cooperative for details.
